Maruti Suzuki is set to launch its first electric SUV, the eVitara, in India. This vehicle has undergone rigorous testing to ensure it meets high standards. Recently, Suzuki released a video showcasing the eVitara’s performance in snowy conditions at a proving ground in Hokkaido, Japan.
Design and Features
The eVitara closely resembles the eVX concept, featuring a muscular design. The front end includes tri-LED daytime running lights and a closed-off grille. The lower bumper, similar to the Brezza, houses small fog lamps and skid plates.
The charging port is located on the front flanks, and there’s a prominent bulge over the rear wheel arch. Aerodynamically designed alloy wheels, likely measuring 18 inches, enhance its side profile.
The rear features connected taillights with an integrated spoiler, eVitara lettering, and a skid plate. The SUV measures 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,635 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. It offers a ground clearance of 180 mm.
Battery and Performance
The eVitara will be available with two battery options: a 49 kWh pack and a 61 kWh pack. The 49 kWh battery, paired with a single motor on the front axle, produces 144 horsepower and 189 Nm of torque.
The 61 kWh battery offers two configurations: a single-motor setup delivering 174 horsepower and 189 Nm of torque, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup producing 184 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque.
The larger battery variant is expected to offer a range of up to 550 km on a single charge.
AllGrip-e AWD System
Suzuki’s AllGrip-e AWD system enhances the eVitara’s off-road capabilities. It features a Trail mode that simulates a limited-slip differential by applying brakes to wheels with low traction and redirecting torque to those with better grip.
This system was demonstrated in the snowy test, where the eVitara maintained traction and stability on slippery surfaces.
Interior and Technology
Spy shots suggest that the India-spec eVitara will feature a modern interior with dual-integrated screens and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Expected features include a wireless phone charger, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, a large touchscreen infotainment system, and a fully digital instrument cluster.
Launch and Competition
Maruti Suzuki plans to debut the eVitara at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January, with an expected launch in March 2025.
The eVitara will compete with models like the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and Mahindra BE 6 in the Indian market. Pricing is anticipated to start around ₹20 lakh for the 49 kWh variant and ₹25 lakh for the 61 kWh variant.
Conclusion
The Maruti Suzuki eVitara represents the company’s entry into the electric SUV segment in India. Its design, performance capabilities, and advanced features position it as a strong contender in the growing electric vehicle market.
The successful snow testing underscores its readiness to handle diverse driving conditions, promising a reliable and versatile option for consumers.
